Review: Premier Nutrition (Double Chocolate Crunch)

Here is my review of another flavor offering from Premier Nutrition, Double Chocolate Crunch:

Texture:

Unfortunately, the texture is not quite good as the other flavors from Premier Nutrition. It is more chewy, and as such you don't get the same amount of crunch. It still isn't too chewy to make it difficult to eat, but I'm sure most people would like it to be a little softer.

Variation of flavors: 6

Very little variety in the flavor department. But I suppose if you call a flavor Double Chocolate Crunch, you expect it to taste like chocolate. And that is exactly what this tastes like. I felt that the execution of the chocolate flavor was very good, as I previously stated that it was a sweet chocolate and not something bitter that you can find in protein examples. But, if you are looking for flavor variety you aren't going to find it with this bar.

Taste9

This flavor does have a somewhat different taste from the other two. With the chocolate center, you are given a strong chocolate taste. I actually enjoyed the center somewhat more than the other flavors, because there was no aftertaste. Overall, it is a solid chocolate flavor that has the sweetness that you would expect with chocolate.

Fullness Factor: 10

For the size, I would say that this is one of the more filling bars that I have tried. Since it is chewy and dense, it is much more filling than you would expect. It is certainly a viable snack to curb your appetite between meals, or reduce your late night cravings.

Overall: 8.5

In terms of flavor, I rank this slightly behind the other offerings from Premier Nutrition. It is still a hearty and tasty bar, just not quite as flavorful and interesting to eat as the other flavors. Nonetheless, it is a solid offering and for the price, I would not hesitate to buy one of these.

Review: Premier Nutrition (Yogurt Peanut Crunch)

I recently had a chance to try another flavor of the Premier Nutrition protein bar, Yogurt Peanut Crunch. Here is my full review:

Texture: 9

The texture is basically the same as the Chocolate Peanut Butter flavor. Good crunch in the middle with a solid peanut butter flavor. Like the other flavor, it is easy to eat and isn't too chewy.

Variation of flavors: 7

I felt it performed a little better than the Chocolate Peanut Butter flavor in this aspect. This is mainly due to the yogurt layer on the outside. Whereas chocolate seems to blend with peanut butter, the yogurt flavor is a little more discernible. It still doesn't have huge flavor differentiation, but you do get a different taste with the yogurt (which somewhat resembles white chocolate).

Taste9

The inside of the bar is essentially the same taste as the Chocolate Peanut Butter flavor. The only difference is that instead of chocolate on the outside, there is a yogurt layer. I can't say that one is necessarily better than the other, I suppose it would come down to what you are in the mood for.

Fullness Factor: 9

In this category, everything said about the Chocolate Peanut Butter flavor applies to this flavor.

Overall: 9

Again, another solid offering from Premier Nutrition. While it doesn't really differentiate itself from the Chocolate Peanut Butter flavor, it does offer a slight variation. The yogurt on the outside provides a slightly different taste from chocolate, even if the inside is essentially the same. I enjoyed this about the same as the Chocolate Peanut Butter flavor, and I wouldn't hesitate to choose one over the other depending on preference.

Review: Premier Nutrition (Chocolate Peanut Butter)

Premier Nutrition has been on the market for awhile, and is known to be the cheapest protein bar available. A box of 15 of them will usually only cost around $22, making it significantly cheaper than many other offerings. In addition, with 30 grams of protein and around 280 calories, they don't have as much of the added junk as other bars. I had a chance to try the Premier Nutrition bar in the Chocolate Peanut Butter flavor and here is my full review:

Texture: 9

This was certainly a surprise. When I felt the bar in the package, it felt very firm and I was just imagining biting into a hard and chewy mess. I was pleasantly surprised that the bar is very soft and rich, and it has a light crunchy wafer texture to it. The middle is basically one texture, surrounded by the outer chocolate layer. It doesn't claim to have many different textures, and the one texture that is has (A crunchy peanut butter) works very well. Not only do you get the initial crunch in this middle layer, but it is a lasting texture. You are able to chew a few times before the crunch is lost, which adds great texture to the peanut butter taste.

Variation of flavors: 6

There isn't much variety, but it also isn't advertised as so. It is called Chocolate Peanut Butter and that is exactly what it is. There is a chocolate layer that you can certainly discern on the outside, combined with a peanut butter crunch layer on the inside. Overall, it works very well as a combination. Rather than trying to combine too many flavors, the bar is simple. But in doing so, it has created a very tasty treat that is enjoyable to eat.

Taste9

I was very surprised at the taste. It tastes like a combination of chocolate and peanut butter, but is very enjoyable to eat. While it doesn't have the more exotic flavors of some more expensive bars, it is very enjoyable to eat.

Fullness Factor: 9

Anytime you use peanut butter as a flavor, it will bring with it a certain degree of fullness. This bar is pretty filling and can certainly hold you over between meals. Part of what keeps it from receiving a 10 is how enjoyable it was to eat. At 72 grams, it is a little smaller than large bars like Supreme, but it is enjoyable to the last bite. The crunch of the peanut butter never gets old and at the end, I was wishing I could have another one.

Overall: 9

I must reiterate how surprising this bar was. I was expecting a simple old-school protein bar, one that you eat simply for the nutrition. But in the end, it was truly an enjoyable treat. I can't say it compares to something like Supreme Peanut Butter & Jelly, but the fact that it is much cheaper, healthier, and good in taste makes it a viable substitute. Any company can make a tasty candy bar with some protein in it (Ahem, Supreme) but it is nice to have a truly nutritious snack without all the added sugar and starches. I will certainly be buying more of this bar in the future, not only because of price and nutrition, but because it was actually a tasty treat.

Review: Supreme Protein (Cookies n' Cream)

Here is my full review of the Supreme protein bar in the Cookies n' Cream flavor:

Texture: 10

This bar is a little chewy, but to the perfect degree in my opinion. Sometimes a bar can be almost too mushy, to the point that it is gone before you even really enjoyed it. To me, the Cookies n' Cream flavor had the perfect combination of being slightly chewy, but still very easy and enjoyable to eat.

Variation of flavors10

Supreme did an especially good job in this aspect. When you first bite into the bar, you get the crunch of the cookie pieces on top. Then, you can clearly discern the flavor of the cream in the middle. The bottom of the bar gives a chocolate taste to top off the experience. This bar is a complete three layer masterpiece, with great differentiation between each flavor and texture.

Taste: 10

Great flavor to this bar. They really did a good job on executing the Cookies n' Cream combination. While it isn't as rich as say, an Oreo, it does a good job of presenting the cookie flavoring coupled with the cream filling.

Fullness Factor: 9

Overall, this bar is pretty filling. It has the fullness factor of a very chewy bar, without being too much so. It is very easy and enjoyable to eat, so you might be wanting more by the time you are finished. Nonetheless, you likely will feel that it did an ample job at satisfying your appetite.

Overall: 10

This is one of the best tasting bars currently being offered. In terms of Supreme, it is right up there with the Peanut Butter & Jelly flavor. I would have no hesitation picking this flavor from a variety of other offerings. They simply did a very good job with the textures of the bar, and it really gives you the sensation that you are eating a candy bar. Without a doubt, top three pick for best tasting protein bar.

Review: Supreme Protein (Rocky Road Brownie)

Rocky Road is another of the new flavors being offered by Supreme. I had a chance to try it today, and here is my full review:

Texture: 7

Put simply, this bar is too chewy. This is one of these bars that makes many people turned off by protein bars. You have to work and work to chew the bar, and by the time you are at the end your jaw is actually tired.

Variation of flavors: 7

I felt that Supreme could really improve here. As I stated previously, the "brownie" layer and the marshmallow layer are the same consistency, leading them to blend together from a texture standpoint. In addition, there is not much taste to the marshmallow layer, so you really just get the taste of fudge. There is a layer of almonds on the top, but these really add little to texture variety. They are pretty soft, so they don't offer any crunch or other way of discerning themselves from the rest of the bar. Despite this flavor having three layers, it is really one dimensional as you only get the flavor of the fudge.

Taste8

Honestly, I was expecting more. On paper, this sounds like it would taste fantastic. Unfortunately, it doesn't quite execute on the flavor profile. Rather than being brownie at the bottom, it more closely resembles fudge (Giving it that very chewy texture). There is also the marshmallow layer, but not only is it the same consistency as the fudge, it really can't be discerned taste-wise.

Fullness Factor: 9

One good thing about the bar is that it is fulling. Due to it being very chewy, it does have a certain density that fills up the stomach. While the almonds do little in the way of taste or texture, they do add substance to the bar, which in turn makes it more filling.

Overall: 7

In the end, this flavor just wasn't what I am used to seeing from Supreme. It wasn't bad as a protein bar, but in my opinion it is one of their two worst flavors. If you are going to eat a bar that contains up to 410 calories (As some large Supreme's do), you might as well pick the one that offers the best taste. Unfortunately, I did not feel that Rocky Road Brownie offered this. There are simply too many fantastic offerings from Supreme for me to really consider buying another of these.

Review: Supreme Protein (Peanut Butter Pretzel Twist)

Today I had the chance to try one of Supreme's newer flavors, Peanut Butter Pretzel Twist. Here is my full review of the bar:

Texture: 9

When you first bite into the bar, you get a pretty decent pretzel crunch. Since the pretzels are dispersed throughout the bar, the amount of crunch you receive varies from bite to bite. After the initial crunch, you are flooded with peanut butter flavor. There is a light taste of chocolate from the covering of the bar, but peanut butter is undoubtedly the dominant flavor. Even after the initial pretzel bite, peanut butter easily takes over as the primary flavor. In terms of chewiness, the bar is pretty easy to eat. You can bite through it easily and don't have to work too hard to eat it. In terms of consistency, it is much like a candy bar.

Variation of flavors: 8

Unfortunately, there was little variation in the bar. In the initial bite, you are hit with the nice crunch from the pretzel. But that is brief, as the taste of peanut butter quickly takes over. There are certainly two flavors to the bar but once you quickly chew the pretzel pieces, peanut butter becomes the overwhelming flavor.

Taste9.5

While the peanut butter can be overwhelming, I found it to be enjoyable overall. The addition of the pretzel really put the bar over the top, as the added crunch was a very welcome addition.

Fullness Factor: 9

The peanut butter texture makes the bar pretty filling overall. While it's not overly dense, it still has a way of making you feel full and satisfied. In addition, the strong peanut butter flavor leaves a taste in your mouth long after finishing the bar, so this could also contribute to keeping you satisfied.

Overall: 9

While it isn't perfect, the Peanut Butter Pretzel Twist flavor from Supreme is a very nice treat. I think they did a great job with the addition of the pretzel pieces. While they could have added more to ensure that each bite has that great crunch, you will nonetheless receive a crunchy texture with each bite. This is enough of a variation from the peanut butter to keep this bar from being boring. Also, the fact that is is not overly dense and chewy makes it very enjoyable to eat. Without a doubt, this is one of the best tasting protein bars currently being offered.

Review: Supreme Protein (Caramel Nut Chocolate)

Today I had the chance to review one of the original Supreme flavors, Caramel Nut. Here is my full review of it:

Texture: 8

The Caramel Nut flavor is a little bit chewy, but not as bad as some other bars on the market. Regardless, you will likely get to the end of the bar with a tired jaw from eating this thing. While the middle has a few different textures, they seem to blend together to create the sensation of nougat.

Variation of flavors: 9

In terms of the bar itself, the inside mostly meshes together to create one texture. Where it differentiates itself it in the layer of rice krispies on top. On initial bite, your first taste is this great crispy texture. Unfortunately, the rest of the bar seems to mesh textures together, creating only two discernible textures. Nonetheless, the fact that you get the crispiness and then the caramel nut flavor makes this an enjoyable bar with multiple flavor personalities.

Taste9

In terms of a protein bar, it has very good taste. When it initially came out, I would have certainly given it a 10. But with companies continually raising the bar on protein bar taste, the Caramel Nut flavor is unfortunately being passed up. With that being said, it is still a great tasting protein bar. It is the classic combination of peanut and caramel that has been used by countless companies, and perhaps none executes it better than Supreme.

Fullness Factor: 9

Due to the chewy texture of the bar, it does bring with it a good fullness factor. Also, due to the fact that it is so chewy, your jaw will likely be a bit tired by the end of the bar. Whereas you can wolf through a flavor like the Peanut Butter & Jelly, you have to work a little bit to eat the Caramel Nut Chocolate. In addition, the bar is pretty dense, providing a pretty good feeling of fullness.

Overall: 8

The Supreme Protein in Caramel Nut flavor is, overall, a great tasting bar. If I am looking to purchase a protein bar I would have no hesitations picking one of these up. With that being said, it wouldn't usually be my first choice. As I mentioned earlier, it is one of the original flavors and has since been passed up by more exotic flavors and combinations. Regardless, it is still an original staple and one that tastes very good considering the fact that it is a protein bar.

Review: Supreme Protein (Peanut Butter & Jelly)

Today I had the fortune of trying one of Supreme's newer flavor, Peanut Butter & Jelly. Here is my complete review of the bar:

Texture: 10

The first bite was a welcome surprise. Normally, when you bite into a protein bar it is rather hard and chewy. Not so much with the Peanut Butter & Jelly flavor, as it was very soft and didn't have the tough texture that unfortunately plagues many protein bars.

Variation of flavors: 10

Supreme really did a great job with this aspect. You can clearly define the different flavors of the bar. At the top is a delicious layer of peanuts. In the middle is a thin layer of jelly, which is clearly discernible when you bite through the bar. At the bottom is the peanut butter, which takes a bit of a backseat to the other flavors. I think this is good, as peanut butter can certainly create an overpowering taste but does not in this instance. This might be the best variation that I have had in a protein bar yet, as you can clearly discern between the three main layers in the bar.

Taste: 10

Again, the fact that all flavors are clearly discernible makes me have to give this a 10. The jelly in the middle gives the bar a fantastic consistency, and the fact that it is light makes it very enjoyable to eat. You don't have to work chewing for 30 minutes to finish this bar. Supreme does a fantastic job of taking one of the best combinations, peanut butter & jelly, and combining it into a bar.

Fullness Factor: 8

While I praise the light texture of the bar, unfortunately this hurts the fullness factor. While many bars are so dense that you have to literally work to chew through them, these bars are also usually very filling. This bar is so easy and enjoyable to eat that you get to the end and just want more. The peanut butter can contribute to fullness, but the jelly is a light addition and didn't make me feel too full. This can perhaps be a good thing if you are eating this before the gym, as it can be a nice snack without making you feel sick.

Overall: 10

I can't give this anything but a 10. It was just so enjoyable to eat that I could easily have eaten another one, or even two. It is the perfect consistency and seamlessly blends flavors together in a way that few other protein bars do. Supreme really did a fantastic job with the Peanut Butter & Jelly flavor, and it is arguably the tastiest bar currently on the market.
